How To Dynamically Update The Number In Counter?

My question, is it possible to use a short code to update the number required in the 'Counter Settings' for Counter?

I would like to use a Counter to show the total number of posts I have on my website, if you can advise on both the short code and (if at all possible) how to generate a total number of post on my website.

And just to push it that little bit further...... can the total number of posts be filtered using taxonomies or tags?
